Season 05 changed how Rogue Run opens: what that does to your build order

Rogue Run now hands you full armour and three plates before the first zombie spawns, thins out every round, and lets Ammo Mods follow you onto a new weapon. All three change what you should take from the reward path.

Key takeaways

  • Ammo Mods now transfer to a new weapon reward, so take the better gun.
  • Starting armour and thinner rounds move the early decision from survival to scaling.
  • Permanent Rogue Run unlocks are shared across playlists, so Casual progress counts on Hardcore.

If you have been holding onto a weapon in Rogue Run because your Ammo Mod is sitting on it, you can stop. As of Season 05, the mod comes with you when you take a new weapon reward for that slot. That is the single most consequential line in the Zombies section of the notes, and it is easy to miss among the bug fixes.

What the notes confirm#

Everything in this section is what Treyarch published on 22 July, not an interpretation of it.

Three changes affect how a run plays out. Rogue Run now spawns fewer zombies each round. Players start with full Armor Health and three armor plates in reserve. And Ammo Mods transfer between weapons when you select a new weapon reward for that slot.

Two more adjust specific encounters. The Uber Klaus HVT in the "Every 5 Round" enemy pool has been replaced with the standard Uber Klaus. And you can no longer select an Aether Crystal reward while the game is telling you it cannot Pack-a-Punch your held weapon.

The fixes worth knowing about: health now regenerates if you took damage before killing the last zombie of a round, and Melee Macchiato's Mocha Maul Augment now works when you equip it before you have a melee weapon.

Treyarch has not published how much the spawn count dropped by. If you see a percentage attached to it, that number did not come from the notes.

Astra Malorum, and three difficulty tiers#

Rogue Run has expanded to Astra Malorum with three new playlists — Casual, Normal and Hardcore — described as differentiated by difficulty. The reward paths there are randomised and can offer Ammo Mods, Perk-a-Colas, new weapons and other abilities, across locations including the Crash Site, Museum Infinitum and Mars.

The structural detail that matters more than any reward list: permanent Rogue Run unlocks earned in other playlists apply to these as well. There is also a new Curse Inducer tablet, on the Astra Malorum and Ashes of the Damned Rogue Run playlists, which activates a random Cursed Relic — and the Calling Card rewards on each Astra Malorum playlist are still redacted.

Why the Ammo Mod change matters most#

This section is analysis, but it follows from the wording.

Before, an Ammo Mod created a sunk cost. Once one was on a weapon you liked, every subsequent weapon reward carried a hidden price: the mod. That pushed you towards keeping a weapon past the point where its damage kept up, because the alternative was a stronger gun with nothing on it.

That price is gone. The reward decision is now closer to a straight comparison of the weapons themselves, which means the correct answer is more often "take the new one". If you built the habit of skipping weapon rewards to protect a mod, that habit is now costing you scaling.

The early rounds are no longer about staying alive#

Starting with full armour and three plates in reserve removes the opening scramble. Combined with thinner rounds, the first stretch of a run is less likely to kill you and less likely to demand your attention.

The trade-off is worth naming: fewer zombies per round is fewer eliminations, and eliminations are how you generate everything else. So the early game shifts from a survival problem to a scaling problem — you have breathing room, but less raw volume to convert into progress. Reward-path choices carry more weight than farming does, because there is less to farm.

The Uber Klaus swap points the same way. Replacing the HVT version in the every-five-rounds pool with the standard one makes those checkpoints less spiky. If you were keeping a panic option in reserve specifically for round five or ten, that reservation is worth less than it was.

How to use the difficulty ladder#

Shared permanent unlocks mean the ladder is not three separate grinds. Time spent on Casual banks unlocks that apply on Hardcore, so the sequence is a progression rather than a choice between easy rewards and real ones.

The practical order: run the easier playlists until the permanent unlocks stop arriving, then move up. Add the Curse Inducer when you want the Calling Cards and can afford a random relic, not as a default.

What is still unknown#

Treyarch has not said what separates Casual, Normal and Hardcore beyond difficulty — spawn rates, health scaling and reward quality are all unstated. The Calling Cards are redacted. And the mid-season additions announced alongside this — the Rex Infernus round-based map, the returning Widow's Wine Perk-a-Cola, the Fully Packed GobbleGum, and the Olympia Shotgun and TR2 Marksman Rifle legacy weapons — have no mechanical detail published yet. Activision has said that detail is coming in a Season 05 Reloaded blog later in the season, so treat anything specific about Widow's Wine's current behaviour as unconfirmed until then.
