Key takeaways

  • Deathspinners and the Web Mother both apply slowing web effects, which is the one status that breaks a training loop.
  • Widow's Wine rewards taking melee damage, so it pays out from a position players are normally trained to leave.
  • Completing the Main Quest before Directed Mode arrives earns a unique calling card variant, and Treyarch has not said when Directed Mode arrives.

Rex Infernus lands on 20 August, and the Main Quest opens the same morning at 9:00 AM PT. If you only read the feature list as a list, it looks like the usual mid-season bundle: two enemies, a perk, a trap, a GobbleGum, two box weapons. Read it as a set and it is narrower than that. Almost everything Treyarch has named does the same thing to you, or asks you to survive the same thing.

What is confirmed#

Treyarch's Season 05 Reloaded announcement describes Rex Infernus as the next and final round-based Zombies map for Black Ops 7, arriving with the mid-season update on 20 August. The stated objectives are to cleanse the Shadowsmith places of power, find the Warden's inner sanctum, and end him. The Main Quest is playable in Standard and in Cursed Mode.

Two new enemies are named. Deathspinners move quickly, strike fast, rely on numbers, and carry a ranged web projectile that slows the crew members it hits. The Web Mother is the elite: it screams and lunges, uses webbing to damage and slow, and cocoons other zombies, turning them into environmental hazards.

One new trap is named. The Titan Trap draws nearby zombies in and smashes them, and Treyarch is explicit that you take damage from the Titan's flurry hits if you do not clear the area after activating it.

One new perk is named. Widow's Wine triggers a web explosion when melee attacks bring your health low. Its four major augments are Widow's Bite, which gives melee attacks a chance to trigger the explosion and lets melee kills on cocooned enemies overcharge your health; Hatchling, which summons a friendly Deathspinner from each explosion; Web Spinner, which leaves a temporary slowing field around you; and Tangled Web, which cocoons normal and special enemies caught in the blast and slows elites.

The rest: the Fully Packed Ultra GobbleGum instantly upgrades your current weapon to Pack-a-Punch Level III, and the Rex Infernus Mystery Box adds two Ultra-rarity legacy weapons, the TR2 Marksman Rifle and the Olympia Shotgun, both with full Pack-a-Punch progression and Ammo Mod support.

The pattern in the list#

This part is our reading, not Treyarch's.

Slowing effects are the single status that breaks the way most players survive high rounds. Training works because you move faster than the horde and the gap never closes. A ranged projectile that slows you does not have to kill you; it only has to reduce your speed below the horde's for long enough that the loop collapses. Both new enemies apply it, one from range and in numbers, one at close quarters as an elite.

Cocooned zombies as environmental hazards do the same job by a different route. They convert open floor into ground you have to route around, which is the other half of a training loop breaking.

Against that, Widow's Wine is not a defensive perk in the usual sense. It does nothing until melee attacks have already dropped your health — which is to say it pays out from exactly the position every Zombies player is trained to leave. Tangled Web then cocoons what hit you, and Widow's Bite lets you feed on those cocoons to overcharge your health. The perk is a rescue mechanism that only functions after the thing you were avoiding has happened.

The Titan Trap fits the same shape. It is a heavy clear that punishes you for standing in the safest-looking spot on the map.

The deadline with no date on it#

Completing the Main Quest earns the "Bloodthorn" Wonder Weapon skin, a calling card and 10,000 XP. Collecting the intel — audio logs, documents and artifacts — earns a second calling card and another 10,000 XP. The Mastery Challenge pays an animated calling card and 10,000 XP again.

The one worth noting is separate: players who finish the Main Quest before Directed Mode arrives for this map get a unique calling card variant. Treyarch has not published a date for Directed Mode on Rex Infernus. On Kowakujō, Directed Mode arrived well after launch, but that is a precedent, not a schedule. If the variant matters to you, the safe assumption is that the window is the days immediately after 20 August, not weeks.

Cursed Mode is available on the map from the start, with no Main Quest guidance, a limited HUD and a starting pistol. Nothing in the announcement says the calling card variant requires it.

What is not confirmed#

A new Wonder Weapon is listed in the summary, but Treyarch has not named it or described what it does — only the "Bloodthorn" skin that the Main Quest awards for it. There are no round numbers, no perk costs, no map layout details, and no information on whether the Deathspinner slow can be resisted by any existing perk or augment. Anyone telling you otherwise before 20 August is guessing.
