Key takeaways

  • Sombra moved from Damage/Recon to Support/Tactician on October 6.
  • Hotfix has two charges and heals an ally; using it while stealthed briefly reveals Sombra without ending stealth.
  • Cyberspace combines ally healing with enemy damage and Weaken in one area.
  • Hack and Virus were removed as standalone abilities; health-pack hacking remains through Hotfix.

Blizzard moved Sombra into the Support role when Season 5 began on October 6. The season announcement calls her a Support Tactician. The October 6 patch notes explain the much bigger change underneath that label: Hack and Virus are removed as separate abilities, while Hotfix and Cyberspace give her direct ways to help allies.

If you last played Sombra as a Damage hero, the important question is no longer just where you can approach unseen. It is where your next ability can change a fight for your team. That is an editorial way to read the new kit, not a claim that we have measured winning strategies in live matches.

Hotfix: an ally first, but hacking remains#

Hotfix is assigned to secondary fire by default. The patch notes list 65 immediate healing and another 25 healing per second. Its effect ends after 175 total healing or 12 seconds, whichever comes first. It has two charges, an eight-second cooldown, a 17-meter range and a half-second cast time. Those are the October 6 values; later balance patches may change them.

Hotfix also targets health packs and most enemy deployables for a hack. That use does not consume its healing charges and has a separate six-second cooldown. Removing Hack as a standalone ability did not remove every kind of hacking. You can cast Hotfix while stealthed, but the notes say it briefly reveals Sombra even though it does not end stealth. Plan around that reveal instead of treating the heal as an invisible action.

For a first practice session, identify one teammate who is about to take damage, check whether you can reach them from cover, and use one charge before you spend the second. This is a way to learn the timing and range, not a fixed rule for every fight.

Cyberspace: one area, two audiences#

Cyberspace is a projectile that creates a zone on impact. The initial explosion deals 40 damage to enemies and 40 healing to allies. For its three-second duration, the zone deals 25 damage per second to enemies and 30 healing per second to allies within a five-meter radius. Enemies in the zone also receive Weaken, which cuts their own damage and healing output by 50%. It does not disable their abilities the way the old Hack did.

That suggests a practical placement question: can the area cover an ally who needs help and an opponent who is actively contributing damage or healing? Try that in a low-stakes match or practice environment, then see whether your team could actually use the space it created. The patch notes document the effect; they do not prove an optimal target or a guaranteed fight outcome.

What else changed#

Sombra keeps her Machine Pistol, Translocator and EMP, but their values also changed. The patch notes lower pistol damage per projectile from eight to seven, extend Translocator's stealth duration from five to 6.5 seconds, and raise EMP's ultimate cost by 67.5%. Comparing only her old damage routine with the new one misses the healing and Weaken that replaced part of it.

Her new Conspirator passive reveals enemies whose ultimates are fully charged. The Life Hack minor perk makes EMP apply Hotfix to nearby allies; that extra heal is a perk effect, not a baseline promise for every EMP. The Cybersecurity major perk doubles Cyberspace healing on allies below half health. Choose perks in the current client and read their text before building a plan around either effect.

A first-match checklist#

  1. Check that Sombra appears in the Support role and read the current in-game ability descriptions. This article describes the October 6 release patch.
  2. Use Hotfix on an ally from a position where the brief stealth reveal will not surprise you. Keep track of its two charges.
  3. Place Cyberspace where its ally heal or enemy Weaken has a clear purpose. Do not assume every fight needs both effects at once.
  4. Tell your team when Conspirator reveals a fully charged enemy ultimate, if that information can change the next engagement.
  5. After the match, compare what worked with the current official patch notes before treating a launch-day number as lasting balance advice.

This is a source-based reading of Blizzard's published kit. FPSing has not performed a documented gameplay test of the rework, so the practice ideas are suggestions to evaluate in your own matches.
