Call of Duty Zombies perk priority: how to decide your buy order

Perk order arguments usually end in someone quoting a list. A better approach is to work out what kills you first and buy against that — here is the reasoning that survives map and mode changes.

Key takeaways

  • The correct perk order depends on how your runs actually end.
  • Survivability first is the safe default while you are learning a map.
  • Re-evaluate the order when the map layout changes how you get cornered.

Every Zombies community produces perk buy orders, and most of them are fine. The problem is that a buy order is an answer, and the question it answers is "what kills this player, on this map, playing this way." Copy the answer without the question and it stops working the moment any of those change.

Diagnose before you buy#

Spend two or three runs paying attention to one thing: what was happening in the ten seconds before you went down.

The answers cluster into a small number of patterns.

  • You got surrounded. Movement or positioning failed, and you were caught between groups.
  • You ran dry. You had the space but not the ammunition or the reload speed to use it.
  • You got hit once too many times. You were surviving contact you should not have been taking at all.
  • You died doing something else. Reviving, hitting an objective, or moving between areas with your attention elsewhere.

Each of those points at a different first purchase, and the fourth points at something perks will not fix.

Diagnose first. The correct buy order is a function of how your runs actually end, which is why a borrowed list travels badly. FPSing graphic.

Survivability first is the safe default#

While you are learning a map, buy the thing that gives you margin for error. Not because it is optimal in the abstract, but because your errors at that stage are positional, and positional errors are the ones extra durability forgives.

Efficiency perks pay off once you have stopped making the mistakes that end runs early. Before that, they make a run you were going to lose slightly more productive.

Reload and handling once you can hold a spot#

When your runs start ending because a horde arrived faster than you could keep firing, the bottleneck has moved. That is the point where reload and weapon handling stop being luxuries — the fight is no longer about whether you can hold the position, it is about whether you can keep the position fed.

Re-evaluate per map, not per opinion#

Maps differ in how they corner you. A layout with long clean training loops punishes running dry; a tight layout with awkward corners punishes taking contact. The same player can correctly use different orders on different maps.

This is why a single list travels badly, and why the diagnosis is worth more than any specific ordering.

What this guide deliberately does not do#

It does not list which perks appear on which map, or where their machines are. That is map-specific reference data that changes as maps release, and printing it here would only produce a page that quietly goes wrong. Our sister site CODZombie maintains it per map — use that for the what, and this for the why.
