FPS fundamentals: aim, movement and positioning
The three skills that transfer between every first-person shooter, why positioning beats raw aim more often than players expect, and how to practise each one deliberately instead of hoping games make you better.

Most advice about improving at shooters starts in the wrong place. It starts with aim, because aim is the visible part — the clip, the highlight, the thing that looks like skill. But in almost every first-person shooter, the player who wins a duel is usually the one who was already looking at the right place when it started.
This guide covers the three skills that transfer between shooters, in the order we think they are worth practising: crosshair placement, movement discipline, and raw aim. None of them is game-specific. If you take them from Counter-Strike 2 to Valorant, to Apex Legends, to ARC Raiders, they still work.
Why placement comes before aim#
A duel has two phases. The first is the moment before contact, when both players are moving toward a place where they might see each other. The second is the tracking phase, after contact, where reaction speed and mechanical accuracy decide things.
Aim training only improves the second phase. Crosshair placement shortens or removes it entirely.
If your crosshair is already at head height, already on the corner an enemy must walk around, then when they appear you are not acquiring a target — you are pressing fire on one. That is a fundamentally easier problem than swinging 40 degrees and tracking a moving player. It is also the skill that improves fastest, because it is a habit rather than a motor skill.
The three placement rules#
These hold in essentially every shooter with a head hitbox:
- Keep the crosshair at head height for the distance you are looking at. Not the floor, not the sky. As you move through a space, the correct height changes with ramps, stairs and elevation — adjust continuously rather than resetting after contact.
- Keep the crosshair on the angle, not the space. Point at the specific edge an enemy must cross, roughly one character-width off the corner so you are not blocked by the wall geometry itself.
- Pre-aim the most likely angle, not every angle. You cannot cover four positions at once. Pick the one that is most dangerous or most common, and accept the others.
The third rule is the one experienced players internalise and newer players resist. Trying to watch everything means being late on everything.
Practising placement#
Placement is trained by playing with a single constraint, not by aim trainers. Pick one match, and for the whole match hold one rule: my crosshair is at head height at all times, including while rotating. Ignore your score. You are building a habit, and habits need repetition under mild pressure, which is exactly what a normal match provides.
Expect this to feel worse before it feels better. You are spending attention on something that used to be automatic.
Movement discipline#
Movement in shooters is mostly about two things: not being where the enemy expects, and being still at the moment you shoot.
Those pull in opposite directions, which is the whole tension.
Stop before you shoot#
In tactical shooters with movement-based accuracy penalties — Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, and most extraction shooters — firing while moving spreads your shots. The counter-intuitive part is how long the penalty lasts. In practice, the correct pattern is:
- Move.
- Stop completely.
- Fire.
- Move again.
The common mistake is starting the shot during the deceleration, while the character is still sliding. Counter-strafing — tapping the opposite direction key to kill momentum instantly rather than releasing and coasting — is how you make the stop sharp enough to be usable in a duel.
Games without accuracy penalties (many hero shooters, most arena shooters) invert this: there, continuous movement is straightforwardly better, and standing still is the mistake.
Know which kind of game you are in. This is the single most common cross-game transfer error we see: players bringing Counter-Strike stop-and-shoot discipline into a game that rewards strafing, or bringing hero-shooter mobility into a game that punishes it.
Do not repeat a route#
If you took the same path out of spawn twice, assume the third time is watched. Predictability is a bigger liability than slow reactions. Vary the timing more than the route — arriving at a common angle three seconds later than usual is often enough to break an enemy's setup, and costs you nothing.
Raw aim, and how much it actually matters#
Aim matters. It matters less than the amount of attention it receives.
Two components are worth separating:
Flicking is moving to a target quickly and stopping on it. It is largely a calibration skill — your hand learning what a given distance feels like at your sensitivity. It improves with consistency of setup more than with volume of practice.
Tracking is holding the crosshair on a moving target. This is the one that genuinely takes hours, and it is worth the most in games with sustained fire and larger health pools.
Fix your sensitivity first#
No amount of practice compensates for a sensitivity you keep changing. Pick one, and give it several weeks before judging it.
A reasonable starting point for most players is a sensitivity where a comfortable single motion of the forearm — not the whole arm, not the wrist alone — turns you about 180 degrees. If you routinely run out of mousepad while turning, it is too low. If you routinely overshoot small adjustments, it is too high.
Then keep it identical across every game you play. Most shooters expose a raw sensitivity value you can convert between; matching them means your motor memory compounds instead of resetting each time you switch.
A realistic practice session#
Fifteen minutes, before you queue, not instead of playing:

The third segment is the one people skip and the one that matters most. Aim trainers teach you to hit targets on a flat plane in a void. Games ask you to hit them around corners, at elevation, while your own screen is shaking. Always finish in the actual game.
Putting it in order#
If you have limited time, this is the priority order and roughly what each returns:
- Crosshair placement — largest improvement, fastest. Days to weeks.
- Movement discipline — large, and it protects you from bad fights entirely. Weeks.
- Sensitivity consistency — free, immediate, and everything else compounds on it.
- Tracking practice — real but slow. Months.
The players who improve fastest are not the ones who practise hardest. They are the ones who spend their attention on the part of the duel that happens before the shooting starts.
